Why can Power and Torque be gained from tuning my car?
ECU software is “optimised” to meet various goals that the car manufacturer has. These are not all goals that align with what you would like from your vehicle. The tune that your car was sold with might deliberately detune the engine so it produces less power and torque than identical engines sold as different models, car manufacturers do this so they can charge a premium for vehicles that are higher in the range. In this case development costs for the car manufacturer are also reduced because they are able to capitalize on producing much higher volumes of essentially one engine running a number of different tunes across different models. By running a tune that takes full advantage of an engines real potential it is most often possible to make significant performance gains The software will also be optimised to meet emissions standards, i.e. optimised over a very specific drive cycle, unfortunately this does not represent real world driving well, when retuning a vehicle this is typically recognised and the tune is optimised for real world driving, typically emissions are not drastically different under real world conditions e.g. flat spots or creases in maps that are there to allow drive cycle emissions to be improved can be calibrated out. This will typically improve driveability, reduce fuel consumption and may increase available power and torque.
Will increasing Power and Torque increase fuel consumption?
Generally not, we are able to tailor tunes to your requirements and will in the process of tuning your car ask you about your driving style and how important maximum power, torque and economy are to you. We will create a tune that is optimised to your preferences.
Are there any risks involved in tuning my car?
Yes, but we will work rigorously to minimise the risks, what we do is vehicle specific but in general it will include the following: Particularly where pressure will be increased we will check the integrity of charge pipes and look for things such as damaged or bent clips that could cause fittings to come off when pressurised. We will check for engine related problems such as misfires and timing problems this could be in various ways such as using diagnostics tools or physically inspecting coil packs or spark plugs. We will check the condition of the battery and use a very sophisticated high current (up to 50A continuous) power supply to ensure the battery voltage is stable while the vehicle is being reprogrammed.
