  • Amarok Tune and EGR disabling

    Performance tuning the Amarok 2.0 BiTurbo TDI and disabling EGR (as the cooler was blocked). Pictures are of Barry’s Amarok that tuned a week or so ago.

    Background: The Amarok with a 2.0TDI engine has an EGR cooler that commonly gets blocked up (most of the Amarok’s we have seen with this problem have about 80,000-90,000km on the clock). EGR is there to lower the nitrous oxide emissions so the vehicle can pass emissions legislation in some markets. It is extremely debatable whether small decrease in N2O emissions under some circumstances (i.e. when the EGR system is actually active) are worth the increase in CO2 emissions and higher fuel consumption that is associated with having an EGR system, assuming it is even working correctly, by nature of their design EGR systems get blocked up and don’t work as they should.

    In any case on the Amarok, the EGR coolers seem to get blocked at 80,000-90,000km. On an Amarok there is also a very high danger of the cooler cracking and the water cooling going into the exhaust unnoticed if the EGR cooler is blocked.

    The cost of repair a blocked cooler according to our customers that have had this happen is around $1500 (cost of the Cooler only) plus labour. However we have a better solution, we can tune the vehicle so EGR is permanently tuned off and the problem is eliminated. At the same time we can performance tune the vehicle which will not only increase power and torque output. It will allow the engine to run more smoothly and use less fuel and reduce emissions. It is also a lot cheaper than replacing the EGR cooler.

  • BMW 335i Tune

    We also have a couple of 335i's that we are working on this week and a superb tune that will unleash a lot of power and torque from the legendary N54 engine. We have an outstanding deal on this tune at the minute, and it will pay for itself very quickly with the current fuel prices, our customers report 10-15% fuel saving on our N54 tunes.

    Another car that I enjoyed tuning this week was a Lexus IS350, which was noticeably faster, smoother and immediately responsive to throttle input where it wasn't before the tune.

  • 911 Carrera 4 Tune

    Tuning this 911 Carrera 4 was one of the highlights of the week, the customer felt that the car drove "better for sure" and was much smoother and the tune was defiantly "worth the money" and was very happy with it.

  • Golf R Intercooler Replacement

    Replacing the Intercooler and replacing the intake pipes on Martins Golf R... I suspect it will not be long before a secondary computer is required (by Martin) to allow it to run E85 and methanol injection is added to enable adequate fueling and reduce heat soak.

  • BMW Car Club (NZ) Cafe run / BMW Race Series Meeting at Hampton downs

    It was awesome to meet everyone at the BMW Car Club (NZ) Cafe run / BMW Race Series Meeting at Hampton downs. Thanks for making me feel so welcome!   • Tuning the Porsche 911 (997) Carrera S.

    The factory tuning on this vehicle is quite aggressive in terms of peak power output from the M97 engine, on paper it would seem that there is little to be gained from tuning the 997 Carrera S.

    However the low to mid range torque output in the factory tune was far from optimal and response torque demand increases at low RPM were harshly limited. Our tuning was able to address these issues and we were able to deliver an awesome tune for this vehicle. It was possible to make dramatic improvements to the smoothness, responsiveness particularly at low engine speed and smoothness of the power delivery. Peak power and Torque was able to be increased by 20hp and 25Nm, even though these gains don’t sound, huge gains in acceleration have been possible (the factory torque curves of the Carrera S have a number of peaks and troughs and it was possible to make large gains in the area of smooth power delivery), the full fury of the 3.8l is unleashed almost instantly when demanded, it sounds even more amazing than the factory tune also.

    None of the optimisations to the tune required safety features in the factory strategy to be disabled so the engine is still protected by all the normal safeguards.
